DENSITY

If there are changing weights, for a fixed volume, then density measurement is what you need. This will depend on the industry, application and product requirements, for example if you need to reduce the water content to increase concentration, or add heavier solids to the liquid to produce slurry, then this will change the density of the product you want to measure.

Instruments that measure density work by either measuring the weight of an known quantity, or by how the signal conveys the weight – the less of a signal, the more dense, or the more of a signal would be less dense. Obviously, you would need to understand this signal, and automate the process, so you don’t have to sit there and watch it 24/7. These measurements will often ensure the quality of your product.
This measurement principle is widely used for detecting changes in switching and measuring density itself. VEGA have a range of instruments, with different techniques, that detect the differences in density either at a switch point, or as a continuous measurement. These instruments are listed below:
Hydrostatic – VEGABAR/WELL Range
Nucleonic – VEGA OHMART Range

LEVEL SWITCHING

Another important control to have in place, for every industry, is the knowledge of when to start and when to stop a process. If you are emptying, filling, controlling or protecting processes, then you need a reliable and secure level switching solution.
Obviously having these switching systems in place is paramount, as any failures, or unnoticed failures, in the aforementioned processes (emptying, filling, controlling and protecting) will cost valuable money and even in some cases affect the environment.

It is very important for the correct level switching instrument to be chosen, as there will be a few factors that will influence what switching system you require, like whether there are chemicals involved in the process, or whether it’s a liquids or solids application. Once again, other considerations in your choice of level switch instrument will include whether there are high pressures, temperatures, build up, foam, dust, vapours, or stirrers.
VEGA Instruments that fulfil the measuring principle of level switching:
Capacitive – VEGACAP Range
Nucleonic – VEGA OHMART Range
Vibration Solids – VEGAVIB Range
Vibration Liquids – VEGASWING Range
Conductive – VEGA Conductivity Range

LEVEL MEASUREMENT

One of the most universal measurements needed in almost (if not every) industry is the knowledge of how much you have. This information is needed for storage purposes, controlling processes, or just needing to know how much finished stock is available. I think you will agree, that every business should be of the numbers and information about their stock, whether it’s stock that needs to be made into something else, or knowing how much you have available to sell.

There are a number of other reasons, as to why this knowledge is important, such as quality, safety, economics or productivity, so having reliable, accurate and automated information on hand, is essential for modern day manufacturing efficiency.
To have this required efficiency in level measurement, the selection of the correct sensor must be made, depending on what your application or product is. Aspects like physical and chemical attributes of the product must be considered, also high temperatures, pressures will impact on the choice of sensor, especially when there are any kinds of vapour, foam, dust, static etc. involved in the processes
The following VEGA Ranges will help you with your level measurement requirements:
Radar – VEGAPULS Range
Guided Microwave – VEGAFLEX Range
Ultrasonic – VEGASON Range
Capacitive – VEGACAP Range
Hydrostatic – VEGABAR/WELL Range
Nucleonic – VEGA OHMART Range
Process Pressure – VEGABAR Range
Differential Pressure – VEGADIF Range

VEGA have introduced a VEGAFLEX guided wave radar level gauge (TDR) with a remote housing option. It uses a special connection cable (in three standard lengths: 2, 5 and 10m -longer lengths available) to a housing incorporating the electronics, programming and cable terminals. The process connection height is designed to be as small as possible, with a straight ‘axial’ and right-angled plug on each end of the connecting cable allowing the most suitable orientation and enabling the unit to be installed in confined spaces.
This version (with rod or cable electrodes) is ideal for applications such as; restricted clearance or low head-room on small vessels and bridles, where housings may be damaged (e.g. mobile tankers), if process vibration is anticipated, ‘ambient’ housing temperatures up to 100°C, or even where sensor electronics are in high radioactive areas. This new version has ATEX Gas Ex certification, standard features include: FDT/DTM, 4-20mA and HART protocol (Profibus and F options), integral device data-logging, backlit display and programmer, as with all VEGA plics transmitters.
