Field Device Technology (FDT) is the interface that communicates between the Device Type Manager (DTM) and the frame (software like PACTware). Simply put, the FDT controls the data exchange between however many different DTMs in place and the frame program.

Just as you need an Internet browser, like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Netscape, to look at to look at a webpage – you need a frame program (such as PACTware) to view, access and use a device type manager (DTM).
Every webpage is different, just like the DTMs’ of different manufacturers, but we can see them all through our browser. So if our browser is PACTware, and our Device Type Managers (DTMs) are the web pages, then the Field Device Technology (FDT) is like the HTML (the universal website building language).
The FDT is a universal interface that translates all the data from the sensor DTMs into a language that PACTware can work with and you can read easily and analyse data from.

VEGA are in their 50th anniversary year of providing innovative level solutions and are now offering you a virtual tour of the VEGA head office in Schiltach, where this continuous innovation takes place. Located in the Black Forest region of Germany, the headquarters are in a beautiful setting.
These are the buildings where solutions are being devised for a whole range of challenging level measurement, level switching, interface measurement, density and pressure applications. These solutions benefit many industries like food and beverage, chemical and petrochemical, pharmaceutical, water and waste, paper, steel and metal manufacturing, offshore, energy, mining, cement and aggregates.

You can view where this development of advanced solutions takes place and read about how our 300 basic models are adapted into 45,000 custom designed instruments a year, to meet required customer specifications and demanding applications.
Now with this virtual tour, you can also follow the path of what happens when VEGA receives your order in the sales department through to the shipping department. View the manufacturing areas of the actual instrument you ordered whether it uses radar, ultrasonic, multicore cables, guided microwave, capacitive, pressure or vibration technology.
You can also take a peek at other areas like marketing, personnel, quality assurance and the repair department as part of this company tour.
Another area that the tour highlights is the company restaurant, after all ‘whoever does good work must also eat well’. This luxury restaurant is ideal for employees, customers, visitors and business partners alike.
I saved, what in my opinion is, the best bit until last….
The VEGA headquarters are situated next to an idyllic river in a beautiful part of the Black Forest. It might be this getting back to nature, that inspired VEGA to want to preserve and look after the environment, which is the very reason that they built a hydroelectric power station.

This power station provides the company with up to 70% of the annual power requirements. Not only that, but this hydrostatic power station and weir has VEGA instruments in situ, to measure water level, flow rate and speed and a switch to ensure if too much debris has accumulated, the activation of a rake cleaning system. This is also a favourite spot for customers to visit, as they can see VEGA level and pressure instruments in action.
So take the Virtual VEGA Company Tour Today

Just as every device, that you add to your computer system like printers, scanners, webcams etc, have their own drivers to help you install them, instrumentation devices have their own drivers too. These are called Device Type Managers, or DTMs for short.
Within the relevant DTM all the parameters and functions of the field device are available and accessible. As well as these usual adjustment functions, these DTMs also contain diagnostic and service functions that enable the instrumentation to be optimally adapted to the application it is being used for.
A DTM can be for a single instrument, or a whole family of instruments.
Where can I get a DTM for my VEGA instrumentation?
Each instrumentation manufacturer will have a DTM (Device Type Manager) developed for each field device, or a range of field devices.

These vibrating level switches are for level detection in bulk solids, VEGAVIB operates with a vibrating rod, VEGAWAVE with a tuning fork. The central component of both sensors is the piezo-driven active vibrating element, which when it is covered by bulk-solids, the oscillation amplitude changes. The change is detected and processed by the oscillator and converted into a switching command.
This measuring technique is not affected by changes in density, humidity or electrical properties of the product. They do not require adjustment with product on set up, and the active vibrating element means the switches will ‘fail-safe’ with heavy build up, probe damage or loss of power. These VEGA Vibrating switches are ideal for reliable high level or silo protection system applications.
VEGAWAVE with its tuning fork design, is an ideal solution for applications in powdery media and bulk solids of small grain size. The robust configuration also allows use as low-level detection in heavy bulk solids such as cement or flour. When build-up is likely, the VEGAWAVE sensors have advantages over the vibrating rod. VEGAWAVE works in bulk solids from a very light density of 0.008 g/cm³ (8 g/l). VEGAWAVE with ground level test facility can form the basis for a reliable high level or silo protection system with reliable fail safe design.
VEGAVIB is perfect for applications in larger grained substances, as the vibrating rod avoids product ‘jamming’ between the forks. The vibrating rod has particular advantages in the pharmaceutical and food industries– e.g. the polished version (surface finish Ra 0.8 µm) can be easily cleaned. Typical applications for VEGAVIB are overfill and dry run protection, e.g. in pellets, coarse bulk solids, even feathers, with reliability on bulk densities from 0.02 g/cm³ (20 g/l).
The switches have comprehensive fault monitoring up to SIL 2 (according to IEC 61508), and options for a remote ground level test, ATEX dust Ex areas and special design for detection of solids in water. Five different electronics outputs assure the right signal output for control system integration.
Low-cost versions of both can also be purchased online at www.vega-line.co.uk.
